GREEKS REBUILDING IN OLYMPIA

Riverside, California (USA) � Inspired by the success of the World Trade Center Memorial Design Contest, the Founders and Board of Directors of The Monument of the Immortals launched a similar competition.

The Monument of the Immortals is seeking a design for a monument that will serve as the bridge between the history of the ancient and modern Olympiads by listing the names of all victors from the start of the games in 776 BC through the modern resurrection in 1896 and for the next 1,000 years. The names will be listed in the native tongue of the victor, introducing a global element to the project. The Monument of the Immortals is expected to have a significant impact on the local economy and regional tourism. Additional site plans include a public park, registry of Olympians, visitors� center and gift shop.

This is an open international competition that will be conducted in two stages. The first stage (Stage I) requires the submission of design concepts on a single presentation board. Members of an international jury, led by the Honorable Ioannis Skoularikis, Mayor of the Municipality of Ancient Olympia, will evaluate the submissions. Stage I evaluations will be anonymous. At the end of Stage I, approximately three finalists will be selected to proceed to a second stage (Stage II) during which the finalists will further develop their design concepts. The jury will then reconvene to review the revised designs, and select a finalist to be announced in February 2004.
�We hope to inspire our contestants to produce a design worthy of recognition as a modern wonder of the world; they are competing with history, the great sculptor Pheidias created one of the seven ancient wonders in Olympia,� says Makis Havadjias, Co-Founder of The Monument of the Immortals.
